WONDERBOX came about as a result of Doug Beck & DJ Boris wanting to work with Monica Murphy on an original project. Boris & Beck had done mostly dubs and remixes on the underground-NYC-house tip up to that point, and all three wanted to explore that middle ground between classic dance-pop songcraft and a darker, more dubby sensibility. The result was "Turn Me Over," an instant club classic.

From the moment the record hit the Billboard Dance Breakout chart, it has pulsed with life on dance radio, dance floors, and endless compilations (most recently Peter Rauhofer's Live@ROXY). "Peter Rauhofer and the crowd at the Roxy on Saturdays really supported the record, for, like, years," Monica says. "The place still goes fucking nuts when that record drops. And it's really cool, because I love those boys and they're exactly who I wrote the record for."

Meanwhile, the trio's collaboration has continued in various forms, including Boris & Beck's production of a Murphy song for Robbins Entertainment. Renee Stakey's "Rainy Day" (Dance Party compilation, 12" & CD single) went top ten on Billboard's Club Play chart.

They are often asked if and when another WONDERBOX record will drop. Murphy says, "We're all busy with so many projects, and we always talk about doing another WONDERBOX record." Doug Beck adds, "We just talked about it again a few weeks ago (June 2004) and I think the time's right." He is currently working on the track in L.A. "We're giving the Wonderbox treatment to an old 80's song," Doug says, "But I can't tell you which one. Monica would kill me!"
